The England striker scored twice and set up the third for Robin van Persie as Louis van Gaal’s men made it seven wins from their last eight Premier League matches
Rooney’s first-half double, one following a sharp counter-attack and the second produced brilliantly by Juan Mata, gave the hosts a 2-0 lead at the break.
He then turned provider for Robin van Persie to head a third into the bottom corner eight minutes into the second half.
Louis van Gaal’s men looked to be cruising to an easy victory but were given a scare with four minutes to go when Papiss Cisse scored from the penalty spot.
