Nigeria’s former president, Olusegun Obasanjo’s book ‘My Watch’ has quite a number of shocking revelations and we’re in shock at the personal things the ex-president revealed. While the book reveals an array of things, from the death of his wife to making sure the culprit responsible for her death faces judgement and other things. The book further discloses Obasanjo’s personal relationship with his first daughter, Iyabo.
Obasanjo categorically explained, “We chose one of the best primary schools in Lagos at that time, Corona, as our children’s school. To give them an experience of other parts of Nigeria and to start having the right interactions with other ethnic groups, I pulled them out of Corona to Kaduna Capital School, one of the best in the North.
“From there, Iyabo passed the Common Entrance exams and went to Queen’s College in Lagos. On finishing from there, she secured admission to the University of Ibadan(UI) to read veterinary medicine. I chose the period betwen her finishing at Queen’s College and her entry into UI, a period of almost 3 months, to send her to Paris to study French, since we in Nigeria are surrounded by French-speaking countries.
“After weathering all the challenges associated with these pursuits, Iyabo did not appreciate my efforts at adequately preparing her to get the best out of life. But I did not realise this until one day, after she had gotten married and had a child of her own, she told me that she felt that I had been pushing her around because I did not love her. On one occasion, the thought of committing suicide had flashed through her mind.
“I was both alarmed and horrified. Of course, she misunderstood my love, care, and concern for her and the others; she failed to appreciate my anxiety to nurture them to be adequately prepared for life. I believe that such thinking on her part was unwarranted. But it also shows that the thoughts and plans of parents may not be understood by their children, or may be at variance with theirs.”
